Sujin Kim

 

Sujin Kim is an animation artist, filmmaker, and assistant professor of 3D Animation at the School of Art in the Arizona State University Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts. She studied Fine Arts at Ewha Womans University in South Korea and received her MFA in Experimental Animation at California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) with a concentration in CGI. Kim implements a broad range of visual language ranging from 2D traditional to CG techniques for animated filmmaking. Her artistic practice is based on an investigation of social marginalization and exclusion existing under power structures, and resilient human energy against such injustice. Her current research focuses on exploring alternative modes of storytelling through the animated documentary format.

Kim's animated experimental films have been screened in many film festivals around the world including Annecy International Animated Film Festival, Tampere Film Festival, International Short Film Festival Berlin, London International Short Film Festival, LA Film Awards, Athens International Film and Video Festival, Castelli Animati, International Sound & Film Music Festival (ISFMF), ANIMA- Córdoba International Animation Festival, Five Continents International Film Festival, Denver Film Festival, Insomnia Animation Festival, Quartier Des Spectacles Montreal, ANIMA MUNDI, A Night for Korean Animation by Bucheon International Animation Festival, EMAP 2019: Ewha Media Art Presentation, 2019 and 2021 REDCAT Showcase in LA, Les Sommets du cinéma d'animation, International Alexandria Short Film Festival, RiverRun International Film Festival, Amelia Island Film Festival, and Los Angeles Women's International Film Festival.  

Kim's MFA thesis, Unforgotten, received Gold Medal at 48th Student Academy Awards in the Animation category. She is a recipient of the ASIFA-Hollywood Animation Educator's Forum Scholarship for 2019-2020. She received Experimental Animation Named Award: Jules Engel Scholarship, Lillian Disney Scholarship, Vision Ewha Artist Award, and Adobe Prize at the 2019 Ewha Media Art Presentation. She is a member of the ASIFA-Hollywood Animation Educators Forum. Her commercial CG projects include collaborations with Roc Nation, Epitaph Records, and Warner Music UK. She served as a nomination judge on the Student Film for the 49th Annual ASIFA-Hollywood Annie Awards.
